Gandhinagar: As Shivanand Jha retires from the post of Gujarat state police chief on July 31, Ashish Bhatia has been appointed as the new state police chief. Out of the three nominees sent to the Gujarat government by the UPSC, Ashish Bhatia has been selected as the state police chief. Bhatia, who is currently serving as the Commissioner of Police in Ahmedabad, is a 1985 batch IPS officer. A list of names has been prepared by the state government for the appointment of DGP and a list of 13 names was sent to the central government. When the list was sent by the state government, it was decided that DGP Shivanand Zan would not get an extension. Bhatia’s name has now been announced after receiving a green signal from the Center. Incumbent police chief Shivanand Jha was due to retire on April 31 but was earlier given a three-month extension due to a lockdown in Kovid’s condition. Now Jha has retired on July 31. According to state government sources, possible names for the new police chief of the state include Ashish Bhatia, Keshav Kumar, Rakesh Asthana, A. That. Sharma. TS Bisht, Sanjay Srivastava, Atul Karwal, Vikas Sahay.
